George Ryley Scott
In my June 12th post entitled "More About Me" I wrote about a book I found in a local library when I was in high school. After finishing that post I decided to search the internet to see if I could find the name of the book. I succeeded beyond my wildest expectations since I not only found the name of the book but I located a copy in a used book store. The book was George Ryley Scott's "The History of Corporal Punishment: A Survey of Flagellation in its Historical, Anthropological and Sociological Aspects" originally published in England in 1938 but revised and republished several times since then. I don't know which version I originally read but it was a 1996 reprint of the 1968 edition that I found in the used book store.
I'm sure it is the same book since I recognize some of the passages. I haven't had a chance to reread it in its entirety yet (although I'm afraid I'm likely to be disappointed after so many years) but I hope to do that soon and I may use it as the basis for some future posts.
