Big Girls Do Dry

 

‘Big Girls Do Cry’ is a 58-minute movie produced by Blushes in the UK in 1983.  I believe it was directed by Roue magazine editor Alan Bell and it features a cast of 2 men (including Bell) and 2 women.  The movie was released in the US by CalStar and re-released on DVD in 2008 as English Spanking Classics #46.  It is currently available on CalStar Direct video-on-demand sites like www.hotmovies.com.

There are many spanking movies with names like ‘Big Girls Do Cry’, and variations on that like ‘Big Girls Don’t Cry’ and ‘Bad Girls Do Cry”, but this is one of the oldest that is still in circulation.  The release of ‘Big Girls Do Cry’ was announced in a 3-page spread in Blushes 6 (shown at the end of this review) which was the last of the bi-monthly editions of Blushes.  According to the notice in Blushes 6, monthly editions would begin in November 1983.  This means that Blushes 6 must have been published in September 1983 and the earlier Blushes movies can also be dated based on this same milestone.  The movie can also be dated from that milestone and it was probably made in the summer of 1983.  The Blushes story mentions a 'book' and it seems that the movie is based on that book but I not familiar with this book. 

‘Big Girls Do Cry’ opens with a pinhole camera image of an older man, Albert, with gray hair and a ruddy face giving a hand spanking to a young blonde woman named Annabelle.  Like so many of the Blushes’ movies, the image is very dark but at least the sound quality hasn’t deteriorated as badly as it has in others.  The image soon changes to normal 4:3 format but it switches between the two formats on occasion.  Barely a minute into the movie Annabelle's panties come down and the OTK spanking continues.  A voice over begins about 3 minutes into the movie and continues occasionally.  The narrator says Albert had told him stories of Annabelle’s spankings but he thought them exaggerated. 

The reminiscences begin at about the 5 minutes mark of the movie.  In the first, after giving her a lecture about her behavior, Albert bends Annabelle over a table, lifts her skirt, pulls down her panties and beats her with a leather flogger.  In the next scene, he has her completely undress, which she does slowly.  Other brief scenes follow.  The narrator says that he eventually challenged Albert to let him witness one of Annabel’s spankings and, at about the 11-minute mark, he arrives to witness the goings on.  Annabelle is topless and kneeling on an ottoman with her pants down for a hand spanking when we first see the narrator, played by Alan Bell who probably also directed the movie.  The spanking lasts a little over 10 minutes with occasional periods of conversation as Albert and the narrator discuss the progress of Annabelle’s punishment.  Annabelle is sent to bed at the end of the scene leaving Albert and the narrator to finish their conversation.

Time passes and the narrator laments that he can’t practice what Albert has thought him.  But his sister has to travel to New York and she leaves her brunette daughter Susan in the custody of her uncle while she is away which gives him his chance.  After settling in, Susan starts to prepare for bed and she begins to undress in the living room because it is cold in her bedroom.  This seems a bit contrived but it works.  The narrator, who we finally learn is named George, slyly watches her as she undresses and he soon starts grabbing her clothes.  He leaves her bottomless and hiding behind his chair.  Eventually he tricks her to try to recover her clothes so he can pull her across his knee and he starts to give her a hand spanking.  The problem with this scene is the camera position which makes it difficult to see the spanking.  She escapes and kneels on the floor while she rubs her bottom.  Her uncle teases her with her clothes until she is able to grab her pajama bottoms and escape to her bedroom.

George decides that his niece’s fear of the dark could provide him with an opportunity to push Susan further.  He removes the fuses from the electrical panel leaving her bedroom without power and she immediately comes running to find him.  He uses her fear to coerce her into accepting a spanking by giving her the choice of being spanked in his room where there is light or sleeping in her own room which has no light (this movie requires the viewer to suspend their disbelief a couple of times but it’s worth it).  He heads off to his bedroom, leaving her in the dark, and she soon follows him upstairs.

She walks into her uncle’s bedroom and pulls down her pajama bottoms without being told.  He tells her to lie down on the bed and he removes her pajama bottoms from around her ankles.  This is a lengthy and leisurely spanking.  After nearly ten minutes he has her kneel on a bench where her spanking continues with a small cane.  The caning is firm at the beginning but it becomes harder as it goes on.  Part way through she moves back to the bed but the caning continues.  At the end he has her remove her pajama top just before the scenes fades to black.  In a voice over he says that Susan became complaint after that first experience and a final example is shown. 

This is how the end of the CalStar version ends but there is another version that I have never seen.  A review on ‘spankingfilmreview.com’ describes the other ending:

“The film has a starling conclusion for this era of CP film. Susan is naked and looking very adolescent. She sits astride Uncle George on the brass bed, appears to settle on his penis, grabs the brass bars of the bedstead, and begins the slow up-and-down, trying to restrain her own gasps of ecstasy.”

I love this movie, even without the original ending.  It takes it’s time and develops slowly unlike many American movies that ‘get right to it’.  It also knows how to tease and the result is a very erotic movie.  There are some problems with the cinematography and the videotape had suffered some deterioration before it was digitized.  I would love to find the original version, and I’m told it is available, but I haven’t succeeded in finding it yet.
